The Stena Line Belfast Giants notched a comprehensive 8-1 win over the Edinburgh Capitals tonight at the Odyssey Arena outshooting the visitors 53-18 over 60 minutes. The Giants always looked the stronger team with Edinburgh only dressing 11 skaters and it didn’t take long for the home team to get on the scoreboard as Brock McBride simply passed the puck into the goal on the powerplay, converting a pin point pass from Ryan Crane at 5:23.
Man of the Match, Robert Down made it 2-0 before the end of the period netting his first of the night after linking up with Derek Le Blanc in the Capitals end.
As the second period started LeBlanc then found the net himself just 2 minutes after the re-start beating Craze to tally the Giants 3rd.
The Giants then bagged 3 goals in quick succession the first of which was scored by Benoit Doucet before defensemen Ryan Crane and James Hutchinson got their names in the goal column for the first time this season to make it 6-0 to the home team.
Robert Dowd scored his 2nd of the night and the Giants 7th with a powerplay goal at 50:17 with Ryan Crane picking up his 3rd point of the evening as he was credited with the assist.
Despite the score line the Capitals continued to come at the Giants keeping the defense on their toes and finally reaped their rewards with a consolation powerplay goal from the stick of Rene Jarolin. Adam Keefe rounded off the scoring by latching on a loose puck and firing it top shelf after a scramble in front of the net.
The Giants now travel to Dundee tomorrow where they hope to carry over tonight’s success and are then back at the Odyssey next weekend as we host the Fife Flyers on Friday and the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday.
