Bo Hanson Announces Retirement from Professional Ice Hockey
The Belfast Giants can confirm that 28-year-old defenceman Bo Hanson has announced his retirement from professional ice hockey, bringing to a close two standout seasons in Belfast and an exemplary all-round career.
From Boise, the Idaho native first arrived in Belfast ahead of the 2024/25 season and became an instant fan favourite. In his two seasons as a Giant, the physical 6’2” blueliner contributed 51 total points (seven goals in 141 appearances in all competitions and retires as a two-time Elite League champion and Challenge Cup winner.

His professionalism, determination, and drive are second to none, and he has always led from the front and by example in everything he’s done. Over his two seasons, Bo played an important role in delivering three championships to the organisation and retires with nothing but well wishes and the best of luck for whatever comes next.”
Hanson’s path to professional hockey began in the NCAA with St. Lawrence University, the University of Denver, and Northern Michigan University, for whom he made 150 combined appearances between 2017 and 2022. After two seasons icing for the Wheeling Nailers, Iowa Heartlanders, and Iowa Wild in the ECHL and AHL, Hanson's first stint in Europe came with Danish Side Aalborg Pirates in the 2023/24 season, during which he contributed 34 total points in 65 appearances across the Metal Ligaen and Champions Hockey League.
Commenting on his retirement, Bo Hanson said: "I have loved every moment of my professional career, from the hard moments to the celebrations of winning championships. I loved my time in Belfast, as it truly felt like my second home. Hockey has been such a blessing in my life, and I will be forever thankful for the people, places, and experiences I have gained – it's been a great chapter of my life.
