The league leading LBM Belfast Giants have grown… Moustaches… Yes, they may look like a throwback team from the 70’s with their cheesy facial hair but these rough, tough hockey players are doing this all in the name of charity, raising money for prostate cancer across the UK.

Giants Captain Colin Shields has called on the manliest of men in Belfast to show off their best moustaches on Saturday Night, all in the support of Movember, the charity set up to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.

“Our own Mark ‘Mo-Train’ Morrison started growing a moustache on November 1st and he convinced a few guys to join him. A couple of weeks ago we all decided that it was definitely a worthy cause and a bit of fun, so we started growing them,” said Shields.

He continued, “It’s all in the name of a charity and together we will raise some money and more awareness for Prostate Cancer throughout the UK.”

Brandon Benedict admitted that he likes the look and he thinks the team are playing their best hockey of the season.

“It’s definitely the moustaches,” he laughed, “we haven’t lost a game since we started growing them, we have two shutouts and have been crushing teams around the league. We are playing like one of the legendary tough teams from the early 70’s, we might as well look like them too.”

The ‘Movember’ Charity is a worldwide campaign and is all about raising much needed funds and awareness for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer. What many people don’t appreciate is that here in the UK, one man dies every hour of prostate cancer. More than 35,000 men will be diagnosed this year with prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men in the UK.

The LBM Belfast Giants take on the Hull Stingrays on Saturday November 28th, and on the night the Giants will be wearing specially designed “Movember” Jerseys that will be raffled off with the proceeds going towards Prostate Cancer Research in the UK.

On the night there will be special prizes and a BEST IN CLASS moustache contest judged by the Giants staff and some special guests.

The Giants want all their fans to get behind this and have a bit of fun. For all of you out there with moustaches, you are ahead of the game, and you could win yourself a trip for two to Europe, courtesy of Aer Lingus, who have willingly donatedtwo flights to this great cause for the BEST MOUSTACHE on the night.

2009 is Movember’s third year in the UK. If you are interested in learning more about the work that is being carried out as a result of Movember funds, check out the details at
