The Stena Line Belfast Giants have added Canadian defenceman Will Colbert for the 2012-2013 season. Colbert has been drafted by two different NHL teams. He was originally drafted by San Jose in the 6th round. He later re-entered the draft and was selected by the Ottawa Senators.
Colbert is 27 years old and has been captain at the junior, college and professional ranks. He captained the Ottawa 67’s to the prestigious Memorial Cup finals in 2004-05. Following his final year with the 67’s, Colbert enrolled at St. Francis Xavier University where he played for seasons scoring 53 points in 99 games.
Last season, Colbert played for the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. The 6’2″ 220 pound defender has played 3 professional seasons notching 40 career points. Colbert split time in the AHL in two of his three seasons.
Head Coach Doug Christiansen had this to say about Will Colbert, “Will is a defensive defender similar to Tim Cook or Nick Kuiper. The reports I had on Will were fantastic. One of his coaches described him as ‘a true professional.’ Another stated that he was one of the ‘finest people he had ever met.’ All of the people I spoke with stated that he was great defensively and was a leader.”
“I expect Will to play against the other teams top lines and be a shut down defender. Will also has the skill to play on the power play and will be able to help us with the man advantage.”
Will Colbert discussed his signing, “I’m excited to be part of the Giants organization. I know Coach Christiansen demands a lot from his players and I am confident I can contribute to the hard working, team-first kind of hockey that wins championships. Belfast has a reputation as a first class organization with great fan support and a winning tradition. I can’t wait to come over and get started.”
Colbert will wear number 5 for the Giants.
