The Stena Line Belfast Giants secured two vital Elite League points with a 2-1 win against the Cardiff Devils on Thursday in Wales. The win gave the Giants a third win in three games in Cardiff this season with Belfast’s goals coming from Kevin Saurette and Jeffrey Szwez. With this win the Giants are now on a five game winning streak and have moved two points clear of early pacesetters Dundee at the top of the Elite League.
Despite league leaders Belfast having more shots on goal, Devils goaltender Dan Lacosta kept them at bay as the opening period ended goalless. The deadlock was broken at 24.58 when the visitors were awarded a penalty shot, Kevin Saurette took the resulting penalty and made no mistake as he put his team in front.
At 27.43 Giants Captain Adam Keefe was ejected from the game with a match penalty for a check to the head. At the same time Devils lost the services of Rupert Quiney as he received a game misconduct for leaving the bench. The Giants doubled their lead with a powerplay goal from Jeff Szwez at 35.29.
The second period shots were a complete reversal of the first with Murphy in the Giants goal turning away all 19 he faced, whilst Dacosta gave up two goals from 5 shots to give the visitors a two goal lead at the end of the period.
The Devils made the last ten minutes of the third period very exciting as Andrew Lord was on target at 49.19 with a shorthanded goal. Despite getting this goal back and pulling goaltender Lacosta the home side were unable to get the goal that would have taken the game into overtime.
