Jason Ruff was a crucial part of the team's championship winning sides and throughout his time with the Giants, has exuded a confidence and presence on the ice which opposition respected and revered. During one his stints to Belfast in 03/04, Jason was voted as the League's Most Valuable Player.
Ruff was selected by the St Louis Blues (fifth round 96th overall) in the 1990 NHL entry draft, playing three years with the Peoria Rivermen and the Atlanta Knights of the IHL before debuting with the Blues during the season of 92-93. Later in the year he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning and although he did play for both NHL teams, he plied most of trade in the IHL before leaving for Germany in 1999. Ruff played two seasons for the Frankfurt Lions before finaly joining the Giants in 2001. After playing on the amazing Ruff, Riehl and Berens line and winning the Giants first ever Championship, Jason moved back to the DEL, playing for Ingolstadt. In an injury filled season he managed to play only 23 games. Jason moved back to Belfast in 03/04 leading the Giants points scoring with a magnificent 88 points from 56 games. On returning to Belfast for a 3rd time for the 05/06 season, and after a good start to that season, Jason left the team just after Christmas with a bad groin injury and returned home to take up a coaching role with his hometown junior team Lethbridge Hurricanes. After recovering from what turned out to be a hernia, Ruff's passion for the game and his competitive drive drew him back to Belfast for a fourth outing as a Giant.
