New to the Giants blueline this campaign is seasoned defender, Trevor Johnson. The 6'2", 200 lbs left shot defensemen, joins the Giants from Bruneck SG in Italy where he played last season. In 31 games for the Italian club, Trevor registered 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points, while picking up 118 penalty minutes. Previously he spent six seasons with the South Carolina Stingrays in the East Coast Hockey League, racking up and impressive 45 goals and 92 assists for 137 points. It's his jaw dropping 1006 penalty minutes over those six years though that have paved way for his no nonsense approach to the game. Johnson will be a force on the blueline this season with the Coors Belfast Giants, bringing a well-earned reputation as a fierce competitor with a mean streak to the Giants line-up.
"Ed Courtenay has been working on this deal since the day the season ended," said General Manager Todd Kelman, "he really wanted Trevor in the line-up next season because he knows how reliable he is and how much confidence his team-mates and coaches have always had in him."
Johnson is a native of Davison, Saskatchewan and played his amateur hockey as Captain with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey league. He turned pro with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the ECHL before moving onto the Stingrays two seasons later. It was with South Carolina where he became one of the top all-round defensemen in the league, averaging around 25 points and close to 200 penalty minutes a season during his six-year stint with the Stingrays.
"I asked Eddy to describe his playing style in one word and he said 'mean' which to me is exactly what we need on our defense. He's not a dirty player, but he plays with an edge, I would put him in the style of Chad Allen if any of our fans remember that name. A steady player that won't make mistakes can log a ton of ice time and can contribute offensively without sacrificing his defensive game. It's good to get some new blood in the line-up and after signing the core of the team that we wanted back from last season, we need our new players to come in and make an impact. That is exactly what Johnson will do."
