The Stena Line Belfast Giants have signed playmaking forward Scott Champagne for the 2012/13 season. Giants fans may remember Champagne from his stint in Nottingham where he was near the top of the league scoring charts for the Panthers last season prior to signing in Germany.

Champagne has been a team leader in points wherever he has been including Asia, Germany, Denmark and the ECHL and has won a professional title with the Tohoku Free Blades of the Asian League. The 29 year-old Champagne is a 5’11″ forward who plays mostly wing but can also play center if necessary. Last season, the highly skilled forward played 29 games for the Nottingham Panthers scoring 37 points from 9 goals and 28 assists. His playmaking ability will compliment the play of proven goal scorers already signed for the Giants.

Head Coach Doug Christiansen commented on the addition of Scott Champagne.

“Scott is a gifted passer and he is one of those guys that makes the players around him better. We have a number of players who are goal scorers and we needed someone who can get them the puck in the right areas. Scott is the right man for the job.

“He knows the league well from his time in Nottingham and has proven himself to be an elite player. We needed a player like him to set up the likes of Noah Clarke, Daymen Rycroft and Craig Peacock. He immediately makes us more dangerous offensively and better on the power play.

“When I heard that Scott was interested in Belfast, I immediately reached out to him. Of course, I had concerns about the fact that he left Nottingham mid-season last year but we have discussed this and I do not expect it to be an issue in Belfast, in fact, we have resolved it contractually.

“I believe our team just got better offensively and became more creative. We have an excellent core now and I am extremely excited to get back to Belfast to start working with this year’s team. Our plan since we lifted the League Title in March was to build a team that can chase down another title. Champagne is the type of player that gets teams to that next level.

Scott Champagne, who is still back in Canada for the off-season, expressed his excitement about becoming a Giant.

“I have heard nothing but great things about the city, the fans and the organisation. I am looking forward to bringing another championship to Belfast.”

Scott Champagne will wear number 15 for the Giants. If you are interested in sponsoring Scott Champagne’s Home or Away Jersey, please call the Giants Office on (028) 9046 0044.
