Giants Down Devils in Midweek Matchup
The Belfast Giants made it three Motorpoint Elite League wins in a row after they defeated the Cardiff Devils in a heavyweight clash at the Vindico Arena. Goals from David Goodwin, Scott Conway, Logan Cockerill, and Kaleb Pearson were enough to secure a 1-4 win and pick up two points on the road.
First Period
A physical, back-and-forth start to the game saw both netminders make good saves as neither side could gain a foothold in the opening 10 minutes.
Goal-bound attempts from Nicolas Guay, Ciaran Long, and Joey Martin threatened to give their respective sides the lead, but Jake Kupsky and Christian Stoever produced a flurry of strong stops to keep the score level.
As the clock ticked towards the end of the period, it was the Giants who found themselves on top and looked the more likely of the two to break the deadlock. However, the period ended as it started, with both sides going into the intermission all square.
Second Period
The Devils came out rejuvenated, and it didn’t take long before Jake Kupsky was called into action to deny Kohen Olischefski in what was the most clear-cut chance of the night so far. Soon after, Thomas Caron’s on-target effort required another Jake Kuspky intervention to keep the Devils at bay.
After Jimmy Oligny was given a two-minute penalty for hooking, the Giants found themselves on the power play, and it didn’t take long for the man advantage to pay dividends as David Goodwin finished from close range to give the visitors the lead (0-1).
The Giants’ one-goal deficit almost disappeared in the blink of an eye, as Ryan Barrow’s shot called upon Jake Kupsky to make another crucial save to keep the away side ahead.
Nonetheless, it was the Giants that would have the last laugh as Scott Conway’s point-blank finish doubled the lead with just six seconds remaining in the period (0-2).
Third Period
The Giants began the final period as they finished the one before, as Logan Cockerill’s well-finished breakaway goal handed Adam Keefe’s side a three-goal cushion midway through the third (0-3).
Despite an assured individual performance, Jake Kupsky was to be denied a clean sheet after Thomas Caron swiftly pulled a goal back for the hosts (1-3).
The quick-fire score changes didn’t end there. After Jonas Emmerdahl was penalised for slashing, Kaleb Pearson coolly tucked away a penalty shot over the right shoulder of a diving Christian Stoever to restore the Giants’ three-goal advantage (1-4).
