During that time, he played an instrumental role in leading the club through one of the most successful periods in its history, culminating in a domestic treble – Challenge Cup, Elite League, and Elite League Playoff Championship – in 2022/23.
Goodwin first joined the Giants ahead of the 2019/20 season and quickly became a standout presence both on and off the ice. Known for his composure under pressure, high hockey IQ, and relentless work ethic, he has earned widespread respect from teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Over multiple seasons in Belfast, Goodwin has demonstrated the leadership qualities and professionalism have become synonymous with the Giants organisation.
Adam Keefe, Head Coach of the Belfast Giants, said: “Goody (David Goodwin) has proven himself to be a great captain and leader of this team. He has captained us to a treble championship and completely understands what it takes to win as a group and what it means to be a Belfast Giant. He embodies everything we look for in a leader.”
His return to the captaincy, following a successful 2024/25 season led by beloved former captain Mark Cooper, marks a key moment in the club’s preparations for the upcoming campaign as the Giants look to defend their Elite League and Challenge Cup titles. With significant experience in the Elite League and in European competition, Goodwin brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the demands of top-level hockey.
A consistent of offensive contributor, Goodwin has built a reputation as a high stakes performer and a dependable presence in critical moments. Beyond the stat sheet, however, his influence extends to the locker room and local community. As captain, Goodwin has previously led by example with integrity, determination, and a genuine commitment to the values of the Belfast Giants.

Leading this great club is a responsibility and opportunity that I take to heart. I look forward to doing my part in bringing more trophies back to the great city of Belfast.”
