Giants Down Clan In Cup Clash
The Belfast Giants secured a 4-1 home win over the Glasgow Clan in the Challenge Cup at The O2 Belfast on Saturday evening.
First Period
The Giants had the first chance of the game when Mike Lee’s shot was batted away by Rasmus Tirronen before the visitors answered back with a Josh Tarzwell effort on the breakaway that Jackson Whistle stopped well. Ty Prefontaine and Jake Gaudet also tried their luck to no avail before Tarzwell was sat down for a holding penalty.
The hosts could not take advantage of this man advantage with JJ Piccinich coming closest before they killed a bench minor penalty of their own with minimal fuss. Scott Conway and David Goodwin went digging in front of the net but couldn’t strike gold while Tarzwell was trying his best to be a one-man wrecking crew for the Clan with an effort that Whistle held.
After a Morten Jensen shot from range was parried by Tirronen, Cole Shudra couldn’t finish the rebound but the hosts did get an opener late in the period. It came with Deven Sideroff in the penalty box for hooking and it was a rasper from Kaleb Pearson that broke the deadlock on 18:19 (1-0).
Second Period
The visitors came out of the traps well in the second and Whistle had to be alert to hang on to a shot from Jake Johnson before Goodwin hammered a shot over the crossbar for the hosts. That proved to be nothing more than a warning shot for the Clan as the lead was doubled through a Mike Lee one-timer on 23:21 as Belfast’s number 23 scored his first of the season (2-0).
It was nearly another one for the Giants d-men as Jaeden Martin’s slapper was well stopped by Tirronen before the away side had a spell of pressure at the other end. Julius Reini and Mick Messner were both stopped superbly by Whistle before Cade Neilson tipped one wide of the post from straight in front.
The game fell into somewhat of a lull after that with chances at a premium. That is until Conway broke the game out of the dip in sensational fashion. He danced through the Clan defence and topped it off with a neat finish to open up a three-goal lead on 37:49 (3-0).
Third Period
Adam Keefe’s men came out of the traps quickly in the third and added a fourth less than two minutes later as captain Goodwin slotted home to put a bit of gloss on the scoreline at 41:51 (4-0). Once again, the hosts managed to control proceedings through much of the period but there was a moment of brilliance from Whistle who made fabulous scrambling save.
However there was nothing he could do to prevent Steven Seigo from getting Glasgow on the board on 47:48 (4-1). The Giants number one did make a good save from Juho Rautanen as the Clan tried to force their way back into the game to no avail. Ciaran Long tried his luck late on and was denied but it mattered not as the hosts secured a home two points.
