Forward Scott Conway and Defenceman Cam Knight join Belfast Giants Roster for 2021/22

Signing for the Belfast Giants means a return much closer to home for forward Scott Conway. Born in Basingstoke, England, the UK native moved to Canada with his dad, aged 12 to further his hockey career.

No stranger to Belfast, Conway was the only British player in the 2017 Friendship Four tournament, when he played for Providence College alongside recent Giants signing, Jeff Baum. He also got a chance to train under Giants coach, Adam Keefe, when he competed for Team GB last year. Joint top scorer for GB in 2020, picking up three points (tying with Dallas Ehrhardt), Conway was named Player of the Tournament by the GB Supporters Club. He joins the Giants after playing last season with Allen Americans in the ECHL.

Defenceman Cam Knight made his professional debut with the Fort Wayne Komets at the end of the 2018-19 season, before moving on to the Tulsa Oilers for 2019-20. Prior to going pro, he played college hockey at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

The 26-year-old from North Reading, Massachusetts was in talks with Giants head coach Adam Keefe last year ahead of the ill-fated 2020-21 season. When the Elite League was forced to cancel last season, Knight made his European debut with Esbjerg Energy in Demark. Now, he will be wearing teal in Belfast alongside returning D-Men, Mark Garside and Kevin Raine and rookie, Jeff Baum.

Texan Baum is a common thread between both of the Giants’ latest signings, having played college hockey with both Conway and Knight; Conway at Providence in 2017-18 and Knight in 2014-15 at the Wichita Falls Wildcats.

These are two impressive young players that we have been watching with interest for some time now and who we believe will add further energy and ambition to our growing roster.”

SCOTT CONWAY | #10 | BASINGSTOKE, UK

Forward Scott Conway has racked up some enviable on-ice achievements through an impressive college hockey career, including four seasons with Providence College, before making his professional debut for the Atlanta Gladiators in 2019-20.

Son to British Hockey Hall of Fame, Kevin Conway and a cousin of Nottingham Panthers forward Brett Perlini, hockey is in the blood for Scott Conway. He joins the Giants after playing last season with Allen Americans in the ECHL.

Commenting on his signing, he said his experience training under Coach Keefe for Team GB and playing in Belfast during the 2017 Friendship Four tournament were both big factors in his decision to join the Giants.

“I love Coach [Keefe]’, says Conway. “He’s a big reason why I came to Belfast. He’s been around the game, and he obviously knows what he’s talking about and I’m excited to be part of it this year.

“It was a great experience and being part of that great tournament over there {the Friendship Four]. There were three other great teams and unfortunately, we didn’t win but I had a great experience visiting the city and getting to know the culture… the people were so nice.

“I think Belfast is a great place to play. They’re always one of the best teams, they have a great coach, I know some of the players there and they’re great players. I’m excited to see what we’ve got this year. I’m always on the hunt for a championship and I think they’d be a great team to win with.

“Every time you pull on a new jersey, it’s always a great experience, especially your first time on the ice in front of the fans who will be supporting you all season. I’m excited to be a part of the Giants… I think we might have a good chance to bring home some silverware.”

CAM KNIGHT | #88 | NORTH READING,MASSACHUSETTS, USA

Defenceman Cam Knight made his professional debut with the Fort Wayne Komets at the end of the 2018-19 season, before moving on to the Tulsa Oilers for 2019-20. The 26-year-old from Reading, Massachusetts says when the call came from Belfast, the decision was an easy one: “I was ecstatic,” says Knight. “Belfast was definitely top of my list and when Keefer reached out to me, I sat down with my family, and it was really a no brainer.

“I had heard so many great things about the city, about the League, about the fans. It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m very excited. They have a history of winning; the fans are unbelievable; they average the highest attendances in the League.

“I have a few buddies that have played for and against Belfast – Jordan Smotherman is one of them. I played with him in Demark – he’s a great guy and he spoke very highly of the organisation, the city of Belfast and the fans. He was a big part of my decision to come here.”

Thinking about the first night at the SSE Arena, he says: “I get the chills just thinking about it. It’s gonna be unbelievable with fans in the rink again. It’s what we play for, we love to hear the fans - there’s really nothing better and I’m sure the atmosphere is going to be unbelievable on that first night. I’m really very excited."
