David Phillips Re-Joins Belfast Giants as Temporary Injury Cover

The Belfast Giants can confirm that defenceman David Phillips has re-joined the club on loan from Hull Seahawks as temporary injury cover.
38-year-old Phillips, who first arrived in Belfast ahead of the 2008/09 campaign, has made more than 260 appearances for the Giants across five seasons. Having departed for his hometown club at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, fan favourite Phillips returns to The SSE Arena, Belfast to bolster the Giants’ blueline ahead of the opening round of the 2025/26 Champions Hockey League (CHL).
Adam Keefe, Head Coach of the Belfast Giants, said: “David has been an important part of this organisation across a number of seasons, and we know exactly what he brings both on and off the ice. His familiarity with the club will allow him to slot straight back in, and we’re confident he will make a positive impact during his time back in Belfast. With a couple of injuries in the squad at the moment, his return comes at an important time. We’d also like to thank Hull Seahawks for their support in making this possible.”
In a career spanning over 20 years, Phillips has taken to the ice for teams across North America, Europe, and beyond, including Rockford IceHogs, Toledo Walleye, Chicago Wolves, Gwinnett Gladiators, Lake Erie Monsters, Adelaide Adrenaline, SønderjyskE, and Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák.
Commenting on re-joining the club on loan, David Phillips said: “It’s always an honour to pull on a Giants jersey, and I’m looking forward to being back in Belfast, even if just for a short stint. I’ve got great memories from my time here, and I know the standards and expectations that come with representing this club. I’m excited to join the group and contribute wherever I can.”
The Belfast Giants kickstart their 2025/26 CHL campaign with a duo of home fixtures against Finnish opposition, welcoming KalPa Kuopio on Thursday 28 August and Ilves Tampere on Saturday 30 August. Tickets for both games are on sale and available to purchase here.
