Bo Hanson Returns for Second Season with Giants

The Belfast Giants are pleased to confirm the re-signing of American defenceman Bo Hanson for the 2025/26 season.
27-year-old Hanson first joined the Giants ahead of the 2024/25 campaign and wasted no time making an impression on and off the ice. From Boise, Idaho, Hanson quickly became a trusted figure on the Giants’ blue line, logging significant minutes in all situations, and helping the team secure the Challenge Cup and Elite League titles.
In 51 league games last season, Hanson contributed two goals and 28 assists, totalling 30 points with an impressive +35 plus-minus rating – one of the best among defenceman in the Elite League. Known for his calmness, clean zone exits, and ability to control tempo of a game, Hanson became a key figure in Adam Keefe’s defensive unit throughout the season.
Adam Keefe, Head Coach of the Belfast Giants, said: “Bo was one of our most consistent players last season. He keeps himself in top physical condition, skates well and is very tough to play against for other teams' top players because of it. Whether it was even strength, penalty kill, or late in a tight game, we trusted him in every situation. Getting him back for another season is a huge piece of the puzzle.”
Before arriving in Belfast, Hanson built a strong reputation in North America and Europe. After four years in NCAA Division One hockey with St. Lawrence University, Northern Michigan, and the University of Denver, he turned pro in 2022 and gained experience in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers and Iowa Heartlanders. He then headed overseas to Denmark, playing for the Aalborg Pirates, where he posted 27 points in 45 games during the 2023/24 campaign.
Commenting on re-signing with the Belfast Giants, Bo Hanson said: “I’m really excited to be coming back to Belfast. Last season was a great experience from start to finish. The support from the fans, the professionalism of the organisation, and the atmosphere at The SSE Arena, Belfast is second to none. Belfast felt like home pretty quickly, and I feel there’s still a lot we can achieve together as a group. I can’t wait to get back and get going.”
