Three Steelers powerplay goals helped the hosts to a Sunday victory over the Stena Line Belfast Giants and extend their lead at the top of the standings.
Marek Trončinsky opened the scoring at 2:13 before Jordan Smotherman equalised with a fierce wrist shot on the powerplay at 8:35. However the Steelers regained the lead before the first intermission through Tanner Eberle at 15:15.
Michael Davies scored an insurance goal for the Steelers at 37:28 before James Bettauer made sure of the win with an empty net finish at 58:04.
Following Sunday’s defeat – the Giants are now fourth in the standings with 44 points from 36 games with the Nottingham Panthers in third, also with 44 points though having played two fewer games.
The Cardiff Devils are two points ahead having played two games less and the Sheffield Steelers remain in first place with 53 points from 38 games.
Shane Owen started in the Belfast net, posting 26 saves, with the Giants missing Liam Reddox, Rickard Palmberg and Pat Mullen.
