In the Land of the Giants, Everyone is Equal
The Stena Line Belfast Giants will host a ‘You Can Play’ night at the home game against Glasgow Clan on Saturday 25th January as part of the Elite Ice Hockey League’s first ever Pride Weekend.
‘In the Land of the Giants, Everyone is Equal’ has been the Giants’ mantra from inception in 2000. Fans from all communities and all backgrounds will attend the ‘You Can Play’ game against the Glasgow Clan on Saturday 25th January, where the Giants will celebrate 20 seasons of inclusion.
To mark this occasion the Giants will wear specially commissioned jerseys that feature the rainbow colours, ‘In the Land of the Giants, Everyone is Equal’ and ‘Game for all, game for anyone’.
Fans will have the chance to win these game worn jerseys as part of the usual ‘Shirt off the Back’ raffle. In addition – replica jerseys are now available to pre-order from Kukri Sports both on game nights at The SSE Arena as well as by calling the Kukri Sports store on (028) 9064 7903.
Profits from the jersey raffle will be donated to the Junior Belfast Giants, an inclusive and diverse team made up of young people of mixed ability from different communities and backgrounds.
The Giants are proud to support the Junior Belfast Giants who, in recent weeks, have seen Kaitlyn Morrison, Mackenzie Stewart, Carter Hamill and Ellie Patrick all named to national sides.
Rob Stewart, Head Coach of the Junior Belfast Giants said:
“The Junior Belfast Giants are thrilled to have the support of their Belfast Giants heroes in getting more young players involved in ice hockey in Northern Ireland. The recent success of our Junior Belfast Giants players with junior national teams is testament to the hard work and dedication they have put into their sport.”
“The proceeds from the jersey raffle will be used to provide essential hockey equipment and ice time that will allow a new generation of players to join and continue playing ice hockey in Northern Ireland. The Junior Belfast Giants are open to all young players regardless of ability, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and/or sexuality.”
The Elite League’s official announcement stated:
“We are committed to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, fans, staff and volunteers without regard to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. This season, Friday 24 – Sunday 26 January 2020 will be designated as EIHL Pride Weekend to promote that message as one league.”
Ryan Pettengill, Executive Director of You Can Play said:
“You Can Play is proud to be a part of the Elite Ice Hockey League’s ongoing work to promote inclusion in and around the sport of hockey.”
“The EIHL and You Can Play partnership sends an important message to athletes, coaches, and fans throughout the UK and beyond about how important this work is in creating a safe and healthy sport culture for all.”
