The Stena Line Belfast Giants made it two wins over the Clan in as many nights thanks to Saturday’s 4-1 victory in Glasgow. A double from David Goodwin as well as 23 saves from Shane Owen helped the Giants to a four point weekend following the Giants 5-1 win on Friday in Belfast. Saturdays’ goals came from David Goodwin x2, Curtis Hamilton and Curtis Leonard as the Giants dominated their final away game of 2019.
The Giants remain in third place with 36 points from 28 games, two points behind the Cardiff Devils in second place with 38 points from 27 games and four points behind the Sheffield Steelers in first place with 40 points from 30 games.
Goodwin Breaks Deadlock
Just as in Friday’s clash between these sides in Belfast, it was the Giants who opened the scoring. It was a sweeping move from the visitors as Rickard Palmberg skated the puck into the Clan zone and fired the puck across to David Goodwin to slot home at 11:33.
David’s Double Regains Lead
Glasgow started the middle period well and they tied things up at 26:12. With the game 4-on-4 – Scott Pitt’s pinpoint pass found Mathieu Roy all alone in the crease and the Clan forward was left with a simple finish to equalise for the hosts.
However the in-form Goodwin struck again to cancel out Glasgow’s equaliser. Elgin Pearce stick handled well around an onrushing Clan defenceman and laid the puck off to Goodwin who finished well and low past Killeen at 32:01.
Belfast Close Out Road Win
The Giants extended their advantage at 48:15 to make it 3-1 on the night. Rickard Palmberg’s smart play shut down a Clan attack and he fed the puck to Elgin Pearce who found the oncoming Curtis Hamilton for a cool finish.
Curtis Leonard added a fourth at 54:40 thanks to a cannon of a slapshot from the blueline on the powerplay after Ben Lake found the Giants defenceman in space.
