The Stena Line Belfast Giants opened their weekend with a win against Herning Blue Fox of Denmark. Goals from Ben Lake (x2), Liam Morgan, Patryk Wronka and Jordan Smotherman made it three pre-season wins in-a-row for the Giants.
The two sides will do it all over again on Saturday with face-off 7pm at The SSE Arena, Belfast. The Champions League campaign is now only six days away with the Giants facing Liberec of Czech Republic on Thursday 29th August before taking on Germany’s Augsburger Panther on Saturday 31st August.
Stephen Murphy backstopped the Giants to Friday’s win with 18 saves as the Giants iced a full line up.
Morgan Breaks The Deadlock
After an end-to-end opening few minutes in Belfast – it was the Giants who would open the scoring in the first game of the weekend’s double header. Lewis Hook dished the puck to Matt Pelech who picked out Liam Morgan at the back post for the forward’s first Giants goal at 10:51.
The visitors his back almost immediately when Brodie Dupont found Cameron Brace with room to hammer home a one-timer at 13:30 on the powerplay.
Lake Restores Giants Advantage
Ben Lake regained the lead for the hosts at 29:22 with a cool finish, assists by Liam Reddox and Paul Swindlehurst.
Belfast Round Off Impressive Win
With Stephen Murphy in fine form in the Belfast net – the Giants grabbed an insurance goal thanks to Jordan Smotherman’s awesome unassisted effort into the top shelf at 51:32.
Patryk Wronka’s cool finish at the back post from an impressive Jordan Smotherman pass gave the hosts a three goal advantage at 57:08.
Ben Lake’s second of the night rounded off the scoring only 28 seconds later at 57:36, assisted by Patryk Wronka and Brian Ward.

Belfast pre-season preparations come to an end on Saturday with their second game in as many nights against Danish side Herning Blue Fox, face-off 7pm.
The Giants Champions League campaign begins on Thursday 29th August and Saturday 31st August against Liberec of the Czech Republic and Germany’s Augsburger respectively. Tickets for all home games are available online now through Ticketmaster.ie.
