The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Sheffield Steelers on Sunday afternoon in Belfast. Goals from Dwyer, Baun, Smotherman, Riley and Shields gave the Giants an important 5-1 win to continue the title race into the final week of the regular season.
Next up for the Giants is Friday 29th March vs Fife Flyers then vs Dundee Stars on Saturday 30th March – both games face-off 7pm at The SSE Arena, Belfast.
The netminding combination of Tyler Beskorowany and Andrew Dickson backstopped the Giants to Sunday’s win against Sheffield with the home side missing David Rutherford, Stephen Murphy and Guillaume Gelinas.
Dwyer Opens Scoring
Pat Dwyer gave the hosts a first period lead at 12:41 after a cool pass off the wing from Kyle Baun.
Giants Double In Middle Period
Jordan Smotherman doubled Belfast’s lead at 24:16, assisted by Curtis Leonard, before Smotherman turned provider – picking out Blair Riley, who had just stepped out of the penalty box, who slotted home on the breakaway at 39:17.
Belfast Extend Lead
Kyle Baun finished off a nice Giants move at 51:26 after good work from Pat Dwyer and Jordan Smotherman.
Colin Shields made it 5-0 at 9:52 with a superb wrist shot into the roof of the Steelers net.
At 49:52, the Giants made a netminding change as Andrew Dickson replaced Tyler Beskorowany in the Belfast net.
Ryan Martinelli pulled one back for Sheffield at 51:25 with a shorthanded effort, assisted by John Armstrong. Dickson made a string of late saves to keep the Giants four goal lead intact and ensure an impressive home win.

Next up for the Giants is a road game against the Coventry Blaze on Wednesday evening before returning home for the final two regular season home games against the Fife Flyers and Dundee Stars on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th March respectively.
