The Legends just keep on coming for the Rob Stewart Testimonial game on Tuesday 18th February and now the Belfast Giants Legends roster gets a little bit more incredible to look at if that were even possible, Number 4 Shane Johnson is lacing them up again!
Johnny, as he is fondly known by the Belfast faithful was an original Giant and played nearly 500 games for the club over 10 years and perhaps is most remembered for those two rapier like slap-shots to win the Playoff Final against one of his former teams, the London Knights, in what would be the last ever Super League sanctioned game.
Shane was an in your face agitating D Man, loved by his team-mates, especially as it meant not having to play against him, with a smooth skating style that often saw him as the first man in, carrying the puck from defence to attack with effortless grace. He also won the lot with the Giants, two Monteith Bowls covering both era’s, ISL & Elite, a Challenge Cup, a Knock-Out Cup and two Playoffs, fitting that his last job in the uniform was to again hoist that beautiful trophy up in front of his adoring fans.
The following season Shane was awarded a richly deserved Testimonial of his own and that Number 4 jersey that was only ever worn by Johnny was hung from the rafters, never to be worn by him or indeed anyone else, retired with distinction.
Shane joins the ever expanding list of Giants Legends that includes Dave Whistle, Paxton Schulte, Kevin Riehl, Steve Thornton, Colin Ward, Curtis Huppe, Jason Bowen, Graeme Walton, Jeff Hoad and Mark Cavallin for what is going to be an amazing night for fans and players alike!
Fans can purchase tickets for Rob Stewart’s Testimonial from the Odyssey Arena Box Office in person, by calling (028) – no longer available – or online at Ticketmaster and keep up to date with all the goings on by following @StewysLegends on Twitter!
