Giants Add Former NHLer Brad Smyth

The Aer Lingus Belfast Giants are pleased to announce the signing of Canadian forward and former NHL player, Brad Smyth.  Smyth comes to the EIHL from Austria and is a veteran of nearly 600 AHL games and 88 NHL games over an impressive 17 years of pro hockey.

The loss of Brandon Benedict (leg) and Jeff Mason (hand) for a long period due to injuries has forced the Giants to find someone who can help during their absence and Smyth, who has been waiting for a job in the German Elite League, is the perfect fit. The Giants had planned to have coach Doug Christiansen step into a player/coach role, but the team doctors have ruled Christiansen out of action.

Brad Smyth is one of the most prolific goal scorers in AHL history. He comes with an unblemished resume and he is excited about coming to Belfast.  He has won a Calder Cup in the AHL and an SM-Liga title.  He has been one of the captains of 4 different AHL teams and will wear number 10 for the Giants.

“We came very close this summer to signing Brad. He is very good friends with our defenceman Rich Seeley and Rich really helped recruit him to Belfast.  Numbers don’t lie. He is a goal-scorer and has been one of the top scorers on nearly every team he has played for. He is a guy who goes hard to the net and wins battles in the corners and will be expected to put up some serious points in the Elite League. With Benedict and Mason out, we needed another offensive weapon and he is definitely that type of player.”

Brad Smyth is expected to make his home debut with the Belfast Giants against the Cardiff Devils on Saturday night at the Odyssey Arena.
