The Stena Line Belfast Giants are pleased to announce that Jeff Mason and Stephen Murphy will return for the 2015/16 Elite League season. The announcement of another two additions to the roster was made by Captain Adam Keefe to the hundreds of fans in attendance on the annual Stena Line Cruise on Saturday afternoon.
The 2015/16 season will be Mason’s sixth with the Giants organisation, who joined back in 2010. The 33 year old was named as the Defenceman of the Year at the 2015 Awards Night and was an Elite League title winner with Belfast in the 2011/12 and 2013/14 seasons.
The 5’ 10” former Providence College graduate and hockey captain has impressed Giants fans over the past five years and has now played over 270 games for the Giants, posting 192 points in the process.
“Bringing Mason back is important for our team defence,” said Steve Thornton, Head of Hockey Operations. “He is a solid D-man who is tough to beat and, as seen last season, he can be a serious threat going forward and scores big goals for the team.”
Stephen Murphy will return for his seventh season as a Giant, with the 2009/10 season his first in Belfast and has won three major championships with the organisation – the Elite League title in 2012 and 2014 as well as the 2010 Playoffs. Despite picking up a season ending injury last November – Murphy, the organisation’s most successful netminder with over 300 appearances for Belfast, has returned to full fitness and will resume the role of starting netminder for the Giants again when the new season resumes in September.
A fans favourite in Belfast and eight-time British netminder of the year has proved himself as one of the best goalies in the Elite League, being named onto an All-Star team on four occasions and has picked up many other accolades throughout his time in Belfast including on the international stage with Team GB as well as starring for the Giants against the NHL’s Boston Bruins back in 2010.
Steve Thornton on the re-signing of Stephen Murphy:
“The signing of Stephen Murphy is one of the easiest for me to make. The team love playing in front of him and since I brought him to Belfast in 2009, he has been the backbone of this organisation, helping the Giants to one Playoff title as well as two Elite League championships.”
