The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Guildford Flames, 5-1, on the road and moved to within three points of the Sheffield Steelers in first place. Wednesdays’ goals came from Curtis Hamilton, Liam Morgan, Liam Reddox and Elgin Pearce.
It is tight at the top as Giants remain in fourth place with 54 points from 43 games. The Sheffield Steelers remain in first place with 57 points from 44 games.
Shane Owen started in the Belfast net and posted 25 saves with the Giants missing Jordan Smotherman.
Giants Start Well
It was the visitors who would break the deadlock in Guildford. With the Giants piling on the early pressure – Ben Lake won the puck back in the Flames zone and fed the puck to Curtis Hamilton with the forward cooly finishing on the backhand at 7:15.
Liam Morgan doubled the Giants lead at 9:12 – Liam Reddox saw his solo effort saved and it was Morgan who followed up and slammed home.
TJ Foster pulled one back for the hosts at 10:35 as he shot home the rebound from Braylon Shmyr’s effort.
Reddox Restores Advantage
Liam Reddox turned from provider to scorer at 31:43 when he cleverly redirected Kevin Raine’s shot from the blueline into the Guildford goal.
Belfast Complete Away Win
The Giants added a fourth at 42:27 – after a quick transition and a nice assist by David Goodwin it was left to Elgin Pearce to rip home a wrister and extend the lead to three.
David Goodwin made it five after the hosts pulled netminder Travis Fullerton and the Giants cleared their zone and the Belfast forward was left with a simple finish at 58:39.
