Giants Clash With European Opposition In August

The Stena Line Belfast Giants will take to the ice in August for pre-season games against Mora IK of Sweden and Denmark’s Herning Blue Fox. The four games at The SSE Arena will provide preparation ahead of the Giants 20th anniversary season which begins with the Champions Hockey League following last season’s Elite League title success.

The 2019/20 pre-season games will see the Giants face Mora IK on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August as well as another back-to-back series, this time against Herning Blue Fox on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th August.

The Champions Hockey League will begin only days later with the Giants drawn in Group C alongside Luleå Hockey, Bílí Tygři Liberec and Augsburger Panther. Ticket information for the pre-season and Champions Hockey League games will be announced soon.

Mora IK are a member of Sweden’s Allsvenskan, the second-tier league, having just been relegated from the SHL. Mora finished 13th in the 2018/19 regular season and lost out to Leksand in the relegation playoff. Founded in 1935, Mora play their home games at the Smidjegrav Arena with a 4,500 capacity.

Herning Blue Fox are based in Herning, Denmark, playing in the Metal Ligaen, the top tier of Danish ice hockey. The club was founded in 1947 and play their home games in the KVIK Hockey Arena which has a capacity of 4,105 spectators. The club has won the Danish championship 16 times with the last title coming in 2012.

Head Coach Adam Keefe is looking forward to the 2019/20 pre-season games and taking on European opposition ahead of the start of the Champions Hockey League:

“Mora and Herning will provide us with a good test before the Champions Hockey League begins. Both sides will compete and their rosters will be full of guys hungry to impress ahead of their respective 2019/20 seasons.”

“Now that these dates are in the diary – I am looking forward to getting back on home ice and playing in front of our fans again. These games will give all of us a first look at the new team as they pull on their Giants jerseys for the first time.”
