The official launch of this season’s Subway Healthy Lifestyle programme took place this week when Darryl Lloyd and Jeff Mason accompanied by Giants Schools’ Co-ordinator Gordon Cameron and Danny Donaldson from Subway, visited Glengormley Integrated Primary School. Despite this being the official launch, the Giants have been out in the schools since September.
They spoke to the young people about Healthy Lifestyle choices and the importance of exercise along with a balanced diet. Lloyd and Mason also gave the pupils of Glengormley Integrated Primary School a demonstration of some of the key rules of the sport of ice-hockey.
Speaking at the launch, Giants fans favourite Darryl Lloyd said, “As a professional athlete, I know how important it is to learn about eating correctly and having an active lifestyle and its great to have the opportunity to bring that massage to these young people and others throughout Northern Ireland.”
“Thanks to Subway, this season’s Healthy Lifestyle programme will visit over 100 schools and talk to over 15,000 young people!”
Mark Brooks, Giants Commercial Manager, said, “The Giants partnership with Subway helps give young people throughout Northern Ireland get the facts they need to live out a healthy lifestyle.”
“I want to thank Gordon Cameron, a retired primary school teacher, who is responsible for making the Subway Healthy Lifestyle programme run smoothly year on year and it is through his hard work and commitment that thousands of primary school pupils get to meet their ice hockey heroes as well as hear about the advantages of a healthy lifestyle in association with Subway.”
The pupils of Glengormley Integrated Primary School listened intently to the information they were given about food choices and thanks to Subway, all of the pupils will get to watch Mason and Lloyd in action again, this time at a home game at The SSE Arena, Belfast before the season is out. Perhaps even more special was, thanks again to Subway, all pupils in attendance received a complimentary Subway treat!
The Belfast Giants wish to sincerely thank Subway for all their support in this important work that reaches out to thousands of young people each year around Northern Ireland as well as to the Principal of Glengormley Integrated Primary School, to Mr Arnold and the other staff members for all their help on the day.
The 2015/16 programme has gotten off to a great start and the Giants & Subway have already brought the healthy lifestyle message to thousands of young people from schools as far apart as Belfast, Bangor, Newtownards, Ballynahinch, Whitehead, Downpatrick and Comber.
