The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Hull Stingrays 3-2 to move into second place in the Elite League table. Powerplay goals from Kevin Saurette, Dustin Whitecotton and Calvin Elfring helped the Giants claim 2 important Elite League points in Hull on Sunday night. The Giants still trail the Dundee Stars in the league standings, however the gap has now closed to two points with Belfast, Nottingham and Coventry all tied on eight points.
Following on from a 3-2 defeat against the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday night, the Giants knew a win in Hull was vital and they started brightly – dominating the opening period and opened the scoring in the 16th minute with Kevin Saurette bundling the puck home on the powerplay with assists from Jeff Mason and Chris Higgins.
Belfast extended their lead after 25:52, again on the powerplay and this time thanks to Dustin Whitecotton who shot the puck past Ben Bowns and into the Hull net after assists from Jeffrey Szwez and Calvin Elfring.
After two periods the Giants looked comfortable and the third period face-off seemed to spark the Stingrays to life with Tendler (42:38) and Campbell (53:16) dragging their team back into the game. However it was Calvin Elfring who had the final say in this Elite League clash – firing the puck into the Hull net on the powerplay with only 4:37 remaining in the game.
