Cheverie Signs for Second Season in Belfast…

July 6th, 2009 – The Belfast Giants are pleased to confirm the return of Evan Cheverie for a second consecutive season after playing an integral part in the Giants most successful season to date, helping the franchise to  win two of the four trophies on offer, the Challenge Cup and the British Knock-Out Cup.

The 2009/10 campaign will be Cheverie’s third season playing in the Elite League as he led the Coventry Blaze in scoring with 52 points, during the 2005/06 season. Last season in Belfast was Cheverie’s most successful of his pro career, averaging over a point per game in the Elite League, finishing with 33 goals and 45 assists, good for 78 points. He was rewarded for his outstanding season when he picked up Steve Thornton’s Coach’s Player Of The Year Award, a testament as to just how much the Giants value Evan as part of their drive for a championship next season.

“Chevy was my player of the year last season for good reason” said Thornton, “you always know what you are going to get from him as he performs consistently well every game.  He was our top scorer against the top three teams in the league and did everything we asked of him.  He is a great guy in the room, a leader, a true professional and a clutch player.  He was a huge factor in our success last season and he is excited and hungry for more. Chevy is also a great insurance policy as he can play defence as well and still be one of the best in the league. He is also solid at faceoffs and great in the corners, both priceless qualities.”

Evan is currently enjoying the off-season at his home in Charlottetown, Canada but is looking forward to getting back to Belfast for another year.

“I am thrilled to be part of the Giants organisation for another season. Having listened to Steve Thornton and getting an understanding of what he believes this team can accomplish, I’m eager to get next season underway. I am looking forward to winning some more trophies this season and I believe we have the team to do it!”
