Living the Dream...
Posted: Friday 7th December 2007
Every away trip I have a moment to myself, every time I am at home I have 10 minutes to myself, and at both times I think WOW I am playing in my chosen sport, in a pro league, for a top team, with a great bunch of guys some who have a hockey pedigree longer than I have lived, and realise I am living my dream.
Three years ago I had posters of them on my bedroom wall, unlike Jaimo who apparently still has posters of some of them I am told. A year ago I was so pleased with being selected to play for Scotland, and win best keeper at an all UK under 20's tournament. Now how do I beat this.
I must admit I was extremely anxious my first three weeks, for many reasons. I didn't know the guys, I wasn't too sure if I could step up, it was originally only three weeks, would I let the guys down, but most of all the stories about rookies and hockey initiations The movie Young Blood sprung to mind for you hockey fans out there.
As the rookie I was expecting the worst and to be honest it has been anything but. I could not have felt more welcome, more included and more at home.
With the help of all, but especially Stevie Lyle, I am feeling more and more comfortable with the speed of the game. With the help of Dutes, I am getting used to the humour we are all targets for him, trust me, nobody is safe, and then there's the local guys explaining my roll as a rookie well maybe they are just loading me with chores!!
The Giants, I have discovered, isn't just a bunch of guys who show up for a hockey match now and then. They all work very hard supporting our community, should it be spilling blood (all in the name of the blood transfusion service) or as I have had the pleasure, visiting local schools to encourage healthy eating and exercise. I have had some good feedback regarding these visits that I really enjoy, maybe that's because I am closer in age to the kids than some of the guys on the team (please note, Roman, Troy, I'm mentioning no names!).
I have so many thanks to give to people both old and new friends for supporting me. I know my role on the team, and how I can support them and improve my game at the same time. So for those who have supported me thank you for those who don't know me yet say hello; I really would appreciate your support. I am here to do my best for myself, the team, and Belfast I am aware I have been given a huge opportunity and will give it the 100% effort it deserves.
Oh, and if there is any initiation, I will let you know, lets hope it will not be on GTV!
All the Best and Thank you,
