Greg Stewart netted his third goal of the season and the Giants third of the night to record a 3-2 victory over the Braehead Clan in the challenge cup. The Giants took the lead early in the first period as Robby Sandrock opening the scoring despite Clan netminder Garrett Zemlak pulling off some spectacular saves in the opening minutes.
The Giants outshot their visitors by 15 shots to 4 in the opening 20 minutes and looked to be going into the first intermission with the lead, however Ash Goldie netted a powerplay goal with 25 seconds remaining on the clock to level the scores with Scott Champagne serving a 2 minute penalty for hooking.
In the second period it was the Giants having success on the powerplay. Will Colbert netted his first goal as a Giant at 36.08 with assists going to Sandrock and Champagne before Stewart netted the Giants 3rd at 39.55 with Clarke and Phillips picking up the assists.
In the final period the Giants continued to ask questions of Zemlak, and the Clan netminder responded turning away 13 shots in the final 20 minutes. It wasn’t all plain sailing however as Jade Galbraith, icing for his first time this season pulled one back for the Clan. The Giants turned the puck over in the offensive zone and a stretch pass from the Clan defence found last seasons Elite League top scorer who bundled the puck past Murphy to bring the teams within one goal.
With seconds remaining Krestanovic called a time out and elected to sit Zemlak in favour of an extra attacker, however the Giants defence held firm to claim victory and focus attention on tomorrow nights Elite League game with the Fife Flyers.
