The LBM Belfast Giants continue to put as much pressure on Coventry at the top of the standings, winning the first of their weekend double-header in Scotland against Capitals.Although there were over 100 minutes on penalties in the game, these were inclusive of 50 minutes alone to Capitals Andrew Sharp, who picked up match penalties for fighting and abuse of an official in the 21st minute.
Four wins from their last five for Belfast but Capitals now only a single win from their last six.
Giants made a quick start and took the lead after only 2.31 with a powerplay counter from Michael Jacobsen (13th) and it was Jacobsen (14th) again on the powerplay who gave Giants a 2-0 lead at 17.23.
With Capitals getting into penalty trouble c/o Sharp it was a third Giants powerplay strike of the night to put them 3-0 ahead, this one from Jeff Szwez (31st) while the teams skated 5 on 3 at 24.08. The home side, badly missing injured sniper Owen Fussey finally got on the board at 32.28 when Mark Smith (7th) fired home past Stephen Murphy.
An even third period saw Giants hold out quite comfortably to take the points and they will be hoping for more of the same when the teams face-off again tomorrow night.
