The LBM Belfast Giants suffered their worst defeat of the season on Sunday Night in Coventry. The 7-1 loss left the Giants in third place in the Elite League standings behind the Coventry Blaze and the Nottingham Panthers who remain in second place despite a 5-1 loss to the Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday Night.
The Blaze converted on their first powerplay opportunity of the night, just under 3 minutes into the game and never looked back. Adam Calder opened the scoring at 2:53 and thirty seconds later Luke Fulghum had doubled the lead for the hometown team. Two minutes later, Calder scored again to make it 3-0, which is how the first period would end.
The second period saw the Blaze score in the opening minutes again when Tom Watkins made it 4-0 at 22:18. Dan Carlson scored at 31:52 giving the Blaze a 5-0 lead after two periods of play.
Kevin Phillips was the lone Giant goal scorer, pulling one back at 47:05 before the Blaze scored two more courtesy of Greg Chambers at 47:39 and Fulghum again at 57:24 to give the Blaze a decisive 7-1 victory over the Giants.
The loss came on the tail end of a great week of games for the LBM Belfast Giants who won three home games in a row in the last seven days against the Newcastle Vipers, Sheffield Steelers and Cardiff Devils. The Giants face the Steelers again next Saturday, January 9th as they will be looking to bounce back from Sunday Night’s defeat.
