With this 9-0 demolition of Capitals, the LBM Belfast Giants recorded their sixth shut out of the season with Stephen Murphy making 15 saves. Evan Cheverie also became the fifth Giant to net a hat trick so far this season as he netted in each period.
The Giants for the second time this season created a club record in the Elite league with an away winning margin. Their previous best was eight, set against Newcastle earlier this season.
The game was effectively over in the first period as Belfast hit the net four times without reply. They repeated that scoreline in the second period and eased off a bit in the third finding the net only once.
At 10.59, Pierre-Luc Faubert, playing only his second game back after a long spell on the sidelines wth injury, got the puck rolling as he scored his first goal of his comeback. It was 2-0 at 13.49 with a Michael Jacobsen strike. Evan Cheverie quickly put the Giants three in front at he struck home on the powerplay at 14.25 and then Colin Shields scored with a shorthand effort at 17.27 for a 4-0 first period lead.
Colin Shields with his second of the game added number five at 22.49 and then Evan Cheverie with his second at 28.29 increased the Giants lead to 6-0 and at the same time saw the departure of Edinburgh goaltender Cody Rudkowsky to be replaced by Craig Holland.
The young goaltender hardly had time to get warmed up as within 68 seconds of coming on he was picking the puck out the net as Tom Walsh netted at 29.37. The youngster composed himself after this and only lost another goal inside the last two minutes of the period as Jeff Swez netted on the powerplay at 38:04.
The LBM Belfast Giants managed 13 third-period shots on the Capitals goal and Holland who had taken over between the sticks in the second period can be proud of turning away 12 of them as the only one to beat him was Evan Cheverie who netted his hat trick marker at 45:30.
