Having missed the last four games due to injury Jeff Szwez returned to the Giants line up to face the Sheffield Steelers and ended up scoring the game winning goal to make it four straight home wins for the LBM Belfast Giants.
As for Sheffield they have now lost their last six games. It’s not their worst run in Elite League history as they went 8 games winless in season 06/07. Sheffield were always playing catch up and despite pulling the goaltender in the last minute couldn’t force the game into overtime.
The hosts opened the scoring at 13.36 as Craig Peacock (17th of the season) bulged the net. But within two minutes the visitors were back on level terms as Jeff Legue (25th) found the net at 15.33.
Giants regained the lead with a shorthanded goal from Pat Bateman (19th) at 22.14 and then Jeff Szwez (21st) on a 5 on 3 powerplay netted what was to be the game winner at 30.54. Steelers did get one back as Joey Talbot (21st) at 34.30 converted a 5 on 3 powerplay.
With the third period being goalless the home side took the points.
