The Stena Line Belfast Giants move to the top of the Elite League standing with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Nottingham Panthers, Saturday night at the Odyssey Arena. A penalty shot winner from Robby Sandrock extends the Giants win streak to 4 games as they top the standings having played fewer games than their nearest rivals.
Both teams had a number of chances to open the scoring, but it took until 14.28 for the first goal and it came the way of the home team as Noah Clarke netted. It looked as though that would be the only goal of the period, but with 66 seconds remaining David Ling got the Panthers back on level terms.
Belfast took the lead for a second time with a powerplay goal from Gregory Stewart at 14.26. However, this lead was short lived as less than a minute later it was all square once again as Bruce Graham netted.
The third period ended goalless and the game went into sudden death overtime. The extra five minutes failed to find a winner and the game went to a penalty shootout. Nottingham missed all three of their efforts and after Peacock had missed Giants first it was left up to Sandrock to fire home the game winner.
