The defending Challenge Cup champions, the LBM Belfast Giants, secured their semi final place with the 5-2 win in Newcastle on Sunday night. The Giants have now won their last six matches and have only one loss in their last ten matches but it’s a different story for the Newcastle Vipers who have four straight losses and are pointless in five of their last six.
Tim Cook and Evan Cheverie had Giants 2-0 ahead as early as the fourth minute only for two strikes by Jason Tejchma to pull Vipers level by the ninth minute. Giants astonishingly outshot the home side by 20-2 in a one sided second period but could not beat Michel Robinson in the home net and there was little change in the third period until Giants found a way through, scoring three times in the final seven minutes thanks to a shorthanded goal by Jeff Szwez at 53.05, Sean McMorrow at 55.58 and Pierre-Luc Faubert in the final second to see Giants through to the final four of the Challenge Cup.
