An exciting season lies ahead not just for the Giants as a team, but also for their Community Foundation. Starting as an idea last season by Jon Gleed to encourage children to enjoy reading more, the new Tesco sponsored reading programme takes the work of the Giants to a new level. Louise the Foundation Co-orinator, has written two books using the Giants mascot Finn McCool and the positive message of the Giants as the inspiration.
Aimed at P2 – P4 children, each session will involve a player going to a school and reading one of the two books; ‘Lollipops for Breakfast?’ or ‘Just Like Me!”, then making puppets and doing quizzes using the characters in the book. Each school will keep copies of the books, quizzes and activities to encourage children to continue to consider and enjoy the positive messages in each story. It is the hope of the Giants that this programme will encourage the children to think about their choices and to have fun reading.
‘Special thanks to our partners at the Science Shop at University of Ulster, and especially students; Emma Nicholl the book illustrator, Ian McAuley and Clarles Clements for the online resources.’
