Saturday sees the Stena Line Belfast Giants take on (6.30pm GMT) the host team, the Landshut Cannibals, following an 11-1 win against the Dutch Champions, Geleen. Later in the evening Landshut also recorded their first point of the tournament defeating Romanian Champions, HSC Csikszereda 2-0 in the second of Friday’s games.
The Giants come to the rink today knowing that a win this evening will bring them within 60 minutes of Continental Cup glory & a loss would all but end their chances of progressing to the Semi-Finals of the prestigious European competition.
Landshut will provide the Belfast Giants with their toughest test of this tournament so far. The Cannibals compete in the German 2nd Bundesliga and are the reigning champions after their dominating 2011/12 season gave them their first title in ten years. Landshut have continued their hot form from last season into the 2012/13 season, currently sitting top of the 2nd Bundesliga, thanks in part to their top two scorers, Peter Abstreiter & Cody Thornton who have 12 points & 10 points respectively.
The home town fans are expected to pack out the 7,000 capacity rink in Landshut for Saturday night’s game against the Giants expecting their team to build upon a rich hockey history that has already been built here, including notable former players such as Marco Sturm, Christoph Schubert & Pavel Bure.
However, the Stena Line Belfast Giants will be confident ahead of this match up as they go into tonight’s game having won seven of their last eight games, including last night’s 11-1 victory over Geleen.
With the fantastic following of Giants expected to be in loud voice once again this evening in Landshut, tonight is guaranteed to be an exciting game of European hockey.
