Coventry moved two points clear at the top of the league with this win their second win in 48 hours against title challengers Belfast. As like last night’s game there was only the one goal in it but this one went to overtime before Adam Calder converted the game winning goal for the home side.
The home side took the opening period 3-1 with the second goalless the visitors got right back into it as they took the third period 3-1 to send the game into overtime.
But a bench minor for too many men with 20 seconds remaining was the Giants downfall as Blaze netted on the powerplay at 61.16.
The game had started well for the Blaze as they were quickly up by two with goals from Derek Campbell (6th) at 1.21 and Jason Robinson (3rd) at 3.50. Giants pulled one back through a powerplay goal from Pat Bateman (17th) at 12.44. Luke Fulghum (17th) on the powerplay restored the hosts two goal lead at 15.22.
Coventry maintained their 3-1 lead going into the third period as the second was goalless. But it was the visitors who struck first in the third as Colin Shields (23rd) found the net at 43.32. They then shocked the home side as they hit two 48 seconds apart to take the lead. The first of these came at 50.41 from Bateman (18th) with his second of the game and then Tom Walsh (4th) at 51.29.
Blaze rallied and Adam Calder (22nd) got them on level terms at 55.24. With no further goals the game went into overtime and Calder (23rd) with his second ended the game at 61.16.
