A New Generation Led by Phillips says Thompson

Head Coach Paul Thompson found it hard to single any player out for special praise after GB’s 2-1 win over Poland on Friday, but said the whole week had shown him that the direction of British hockey was going in the right direction.

“When you see how these younger guys have come on over the last few years it makes you so proud” said Thompson “guys like young Mark Richardson, Russ Cowley and Davey Phillips. 3 years ago they were boys and now they are men leading us to a medal at the World Championships

“Phillips is leading this new era of British player. This week we saw him go from promising youngster to superstar in the making. There is a new sheriff in town and he is Davey Phillips. He is now so mature on the ice, he commands the ice and commands the puck, makes great plays, is so strong. There wasn’t anything he didn’t do and didn’t do well this whole week

“I have to say that I don’t know if the Elite League is a big enough stage for him to apply his trade” continued Thompson “I see guys coming to our league from Europe and he is better than them and he is still such a young man. The future is so bright for the boy it is unbelievable. He will experiance many more nights like this one, with guys like him the future is bright for this team and our sport”
