Ballyholme Primary School was visited by George Awada and Sean McMorrow of the LBM Belfast Giants as part of the 2009/10 launch of the Giants’ and Subway’s Healthy Lifestyle Programme. Along with Subway mascot, ‘Subman’, the ice hockey stars spoke about the importance of eating healthily and getting enough exercise, as well as the daily training regime of a professional athlete and the importance that nutrition plays in their lives.
Awada believes that “Eating right and living an active lifestyle is so important for kids these days. Subway has made this programme possible and this season we hope to visit over 100 schools and talk to over 15,000 kids.”
Gordon Cameron, a retired primary school teacher, is responsible for making the Subway Healthy Lifestyle programme run every year and it is through his hard work and devotion that thousands of primary school kids get the chance to meet their ice hockey heroes as well as hear about the advantages of a healthy lifestyle. Giants’ Schools Programme Co-ordinator Gordon Cameron said, “I firmly believe that what the Giants and Subway are doing is essential. We are providing these children with the facts they need to help them pursue a healthy lifestyle.”
Ballyholme Primary School principal, David Hewitt, had this to say on the visit of the LBM Belfast Giants, “This programme gives children an opportunity to meet and hear from a professional athlete whose influence over them can be substantial. The Giants and Subway are providing the children with a unique opportunity to follow a healthy lifestyle.
Andrew Johnston from Subway believes that this initiative is a great thing for the kids and for his company to be involved in, “We are proud to sponsor such an important initiative. From a parents standpoint, I think what we are doing is a GIANT step in the right direction.”
