This weekend the Stena Line Belfast Giants face-off against Hull and Sheffield on the road as the team attempt to remain on top of the Elite League standings. Currently the Giants sit in first place, two points clear of the Dundee Stars having played one game more after 14 Elite League games played.
Saturday’s game against the Hull Stingrays sees Defenceman Kevin Phillips return to his hometown and former team,
“It’s always nice to get to catch up with some friends and family i’ve got there,” said Phillips, “and to play in front of the fans I used to play for is a nice thing.”
On Wednesday night, the Hull Stingrays secured their place in the Quarter Finals of the Challenge Cup thanks to a 5-2 win at home to the Coventry Blaze and Phillips knows that result will be a huge boost for their Coach Sylvain Cloutier and his team of Stingrays,
“That was big for them – they’ll be a lot more confident now and they’ll be confident in their own building.”
Kevin Phillips has played against his former team previously, having spent the 2012/13 Season on the Braehead Clan roster and knows that playing in Hull will be a tough challenge,
“It definitely is – they’ve always worked hard there and they’re usually good at home. They might not always get the results, though they’ll always make you work hard for the points. If you don’t go in there ready then they will punish you.”
The second of this weekends games is against title rivals the Sheffield Steelers and the Stena Line Belfast Giants will be out to exact revenge following the 2-1 loss last month in Sheffield,
“Obviously Sheffield have a solid squad throughout. They have a big team who are expected to challenge and it’s another big game for us.”
