David Phillips Gets All-Star Call-Up

Giants blueliner and GB International David Phillips learned late Thursday night that he will be joining teammate Bobby Robins in Dave Matsos’ squad for the bmibaby Elite League All-Star game being held at the Coventry Skydome on February 19th.

Dave Matsos – head coach of the team representing the North – has named four more players, including Phillips, to his squad and in doing so has added both offensive firepower and defensive stability to his roster.

On offence, Matsos has named an explosive pairing in the current league-leading goalscorer, David-Alexandre Beauregard of the Manchester Phoenix and leading scorer for the Edinburgh Capitals, Mark Hurtubise. The Sheffield coach has also boosted his blueline with Manchester captain, Kenton Smith.

Meanwhile for the squad representing the South, Paul Thompson has selected two vastly experienced blueliners and two of the best up and coming homegrown talents with big futures ahead of them.

Adding size and defensive skill for the South will be Corey Neilson, player-coach of the Nottingham Panthers and Tyson Teplitsky of the Cardiff Devils, widely regarded as one of the best blueliners in the league. Thompson, who doubles his head coaching role of the Coventry Blaze with that of spearheading the GB national team, has added two blossoming homegrown talents to his forward lines in Matt Myers, also of the Panthers and Lee Mitchell of the Hull Stingrays.

A spokesperson for the bmibaby Elite League remarked, “Both coaches are taking their All-Star selections extremely seriously as indicated by these latest ‘signings’ by Thommo and Matty. Just watching the squad selections is intriguing and the game itself promises to be an extra-ordinary event.”

The All-Star game – supported by Planet Ice – will take place on Thursday 19th of February at the Coventry Skydome with a 7.30pm face-off, and tickets are already on sale priced at £15 for Adults; £7 for U-16; £10 for Concessions and Family Tickets (2 Adults and 2 U-16) at £38.
